Russian poultry farming could be fully supplied with hatching eggs by the end of 2023
Russia’s poultry sector could be fully supplied with domestically produced hatching eggs by the end of 2023, forecasts Sergei Lakhtyukhov, general director of the National Union of Poultry Producers. “Taking into account the investment projects to build second-tier breeding farms that are due to be completed by the end of 2023, my forecast is that we could easily achieve self-sufficiency in hatching eggs by the end of next year,” Lakhtyukhov said on Friday at a round table held as part of the All-Russian Field Day in Kaliningrad Region. Moreover, he noted, “Russia could become a major player in the EAEU market for hatching-egg supplies.” He said Russia has reduced hatching-egg imports and expanded domestic production in recent years. In 2020, Russia imported 700 million chicken hatching eggs. “That is a substantial, significant figure, but imports were estimated to account for 20%, meaning that we produced 80% ourselves. Last year we imported 600 million eggs. Imports fell by approximately 40% in the first half of this year,” Lakhtyukhov reported. The union’s head said some domestic companies not only meet their own hatching-egg needs but are also increasing their parent flocks with a view to producing these eggs and supplying them to the market in the future.
