Russia ranks third among poultry meat suppliers to China. Experts believe this volume will continue to grow, given declining supplies from the United States and the expansion of supply channels.
According to National Union of Poultry Producers data cited by the Agroexport Federal State Budgetary Institution, exports of poultry products to China in 2023 accounted for around 56% of all Russian shipments to countries outside the former Soviet Union. China’s share can provisionally be estimated at the same level for the first quarter of 2024, according to a statement reviewed by sfera.fm.
In addition, poultry meat export volumes to China increased year on year in January–March. This was partly due to China substantially reducing imports from the United States, by 29.6% year on year, following outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza, said Darya Podymova, head of foreign trade and certification at the National Union of Poultry Producers.
According to China’s National Animal Husbandry Service, Russia is among the top three poultry meat suppliers, behind only Brazil and the United States, with a share of approximately 10.5% of total imports. The Chinese agency also notes growth in these supplies from Russia, with total poultry meat imports, including offal, amounting to 1.3 million tonnes.
‘Significant factors to consider when assessing China’s poultry sector include major multinational companies selling their production facilities in the country, partly because of weak consumer demand in 2023. China is also currently seeing a trend towards the production of prepared foods. In this context, it should be noted that China’s poultry industry is experiencing a fairly complex development trajectory and remains dependent on imports. This, in turn, gives Russian exporters an opportunity to increase shipment volumes, including by opening new sales channels,’ Darya Podymova commented.
